『光が死んだ夏 9』は、よしきと光という少年たちの物語がさらに深まっていく一冊。光とすり替わった「落とし子」ヒカルが、会社の佐藤に捕らえられてしまうという緊迫した展開が続く。よしきは朝子とともにヒカルを救出するため、暮林・田中と合流する場所へと向かうが、そこには予想外の危機が待ち受けている。一方、暮林と田中は、集合住宅に開いた3つ目の穴を閉じるため、ケガレと協力して行動を進める。しかし、穴を閉じる際の抵抗を抑えるためには、誰かがその場に残らなければならないという厳しい現実が待ち受けている。巻末には、田中の「会社」での仕事模様を描いた描き下ろし短編も収録されており、物語の世界観がさらに広がる。
